Young, Italian and Herding Sheep
Who says a down economy is always a bad thing? In Italy, a suffering job market has brought an old tradition back to life. Thanks to bleak employment prospects, about 3,000 Italian men under the age of 35 recently joined the ranks of the sheep herders. According to a recent report, this is good news for the herding business as these young guns bring with them the most current expertise in animal husbandry.
In nearly 80 percent of cases, the young shepherds have rejuvenated the agricultural sector by improving the quality of meat, wool, and cheese they produce. These young workers have introduced better animal husbandry techniques that weren’t used before.
Their dreams of becoming doctors and lawyers may have been shot down due to a bad Italian economy, but these young workers are helping revive an important Italian sector of life.
